Walking With Jesus - Abiding in Christ | Description and Purchase

Purpose: The Need for Obedience exposits John 15:10 and reveals the all important factor of obedience for growing in initmacy with the Lord. This step #7 in eight steps provided in the Abiding in Jesus series.

# 7 The Need for Obedience (John 15:10)

“If You keep My commandments, you will abide in my Love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love” (John 15:10).

We rightly ask, “How do we abide in Christ?” Jesus begins clearly answering this question here. Jesus tells us that we can abide in God’s love if we keep His commandments. He tells it like it is. The secret is out. And perhaps we are not surprised, obedience is obedience. We are to live just as Jesus lived. When God asks us to do something, then we must obey Him.

Obedience, however, requires faith.

When we turn to Hebrews 11, we discover that God asks very strange things from us at times. Description and purchase Abiding in JesusWe need faith to do them. Without faith, Noah would not have built an ark on dry land. Without faith Abraham would not have a multitude of descendants. Without faith, the Israelites would not have conquered Canaan. God did not allow the Israelites to have horses and chariots so that they would need to regularly rely on Him for defense and victory.

Some Christians assert that obedience is an option for His people. God’s Word clearly says it is not. “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of god abides on him” (John 3:36).

The opposite of belief is disobedience. If we believe that we do not need to obey Christ, then we should admit our perilous situation. Jesus says, “The wrath of God abides on him.” The secular Christian professes his belief in Christ but proves he does not because his life decisions are not shaped by what God wants. God does not tolerate this pretension of Christianity.

John 15:12-17

“This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are My friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. 17 This I command you, that you love one another” (John 15:12-17).
