“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever draws near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6 NASB)

Each of the following meditations and quotes are directly derived from Hebrews 11:6. These quotes help expand our understanding on how rich and deep God’s Word is as well as challenge us in one or more areas of our lives, in this case how fearful it is to drift from God and how awesome it is to pursue and find God.

Quotes and Meditations on Hebrews 11:6

  • Faith is an awareness of God’s presence, compelling an inspection of one’s words, thoughts and actions in light of God’s desires.

  • Like the life-bearing season of spring, so faith inspires us for God’s own purposes.

  • The absence of faith speaks of one’s ignorance or dishonor towards God.

  • Religiosity is unacceptable because our purpose is not only to be aware of God’s presence but to spiritually draw near to God.

  • Belief in God’s existence must be coupled with God’s desire to bring us into His presence for mutually enjoying one another’s presence.

  • Genuine faith has not fully matured as long as one’s fear keeps distance between God and man.

Hebrews 11: 6 Bible Study Questions

  1. Provide at least three definitions of faith.

  2. Why is faith necessary to please God?

  3. What are the two things necessary to draw near to God? Do you have them?

  4. What does it mean that something is rewarding?

  5. Why do many Christ believers not pursue God but other things for significance? Explain.

  6. Trace your Christian life and highlight significant times of your Christian growth as well as weak times in your Christian life. How do these times relate to your faith in God?

Summary

Our level of faith defines our Christian maturity as it describes our understanding of God and desire to be near Him. Those who grow in faith are gripped by the fact that God wants to graciously bless them. God is approachable because goodness ensues those who seek Him. Sin with its cheap lusts are much more easily discardable once our faith can see the delights of God and His goodness.
