The Transformation of Hope

The Transformation of Hope

A study of the future presence of hope

Paul J. Bucknell

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 || Study questions

What is hope? Will hope still exist in heaven, in God's eternal presence? (This is part 2)

We live in an age of hope because there are strong indications of a bright future–not in technology–but Jesus’ kingdom of love and grace. Even if people’s average age of life went up to 300, they would bring their evil with them. Hope is needed because our present world is plagued with corruption, impurity, poverty, injustice, and loneliness. James points out this hope here: “Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?” (James 2:5)Redemption Through the Scriptures

Paul also hints at this temporary nature of hope, “But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Cor 13:8).

Hope parallels faith in that the future world of God’s perfect kingdom eliminates its presence. I suppose this is true; it is the way I have always thought. But I wonder if hope will be itself translated into a different concept.

After all, it is almost impossible for us to think of not living with hope. One might be considered quite ignorant to say, “There is no hope in heaven” where in fact it might be true. It appears, that the eternal world will gain a whole new vocabulary to describe new experiences at an exceptional level. Paul alludes to such glory–“riches of His glory”

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints” (Eph 1:18).

“That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man” (3:16).

Right now, hope plays such a critical role for our lives and retains such an innate beauty that we are reluctant to give it up. However, we must allow for some great reshaping of our experiences, perception, and understanding of our new circumstances when totally enveloped in His rich splendor in a place without time. There will be no time and no future in eternity.
