The Transformation of Hope

The Transformation of Hope

A study of the future presence of hope

Paul J. Bucknell

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 || Study questions

What is hope? Will hope still exist in heaven, in God's eternal presence? (This is part 3)

Those great prophecies of yesteryear will be all fulfilled. Nor will those much anticipated events that we now depend on be promised–again, all will be fulfilled.

There will be no more tears–those precious drops that signal unmet needs. Redemption Through the Scriptures“And He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be any death; there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away. And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new. And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true” (Rev 21:4-5).

“Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we shall be. We know that, when He appears, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure” (1 John 3:2-3).

The word ‘hope’ probably will not be used to describe this future and rich experience–distanced from any deep longing or need. In the end, it will matter little, for the whole ongoing movement of eternity will remain grand because of our transport to a place far beyond time and away from needs.

Perhaps, marriage can place the mysterious impermanent nature of hope in perspective. Right now we greatly anticipate the marriage of the Lamb and the bride at Jesus’ return. This future event possesses a brilliant hope that purifies us and keeps our hearts fully expectant on what will happen when He comes (1 John 3:2-3).

But then, once the marriage is consumed, and Jesus has brought the church into His presence in eternal glory, the whispers of hope will have all but disappeared.

The tenuous nature of hope, on whether it will happen or not, will be discarded just as old clothes are replaced with a grand gown of brilliant confidence and delight in our Bridegroom, always fully delighting in His bride in the beauty of His grace and love.
