The Countdown Begins Now

Dear Support Team,

Thanks

We are humbled again to see how God has provided, through your generous gifts, all the money needed for the short term mission trip to Africa. Thank you for being a vital part of this ministry.

What is even more significant? The 'extra' money needed for handouts (not in the original budget) has come in. So Paul has been doing some last minute handout editing. Praise the Lord that even in a down economy, many of you have set your heart on God that He might bless His people. Your commitment excites us!

God's Real Blessings

It is true, money is not the most important part of this trip. Even if we had double what we needed, the real blessing is the work of God in our hearts, and theirs. Your giving is confirmation of God's work. However, we must focus in prayer to secure that blessing.

"... 'Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the LORD of hosts." (Zech 4:6).

May we see the mighty Spirit of God strengthen the African leadership so that they might have a full part in extending the glory of God worldwide! Here is what one of our coordinators said regarding the upcoming "Building a Great Marriage" seminar.

"It is interesting that we have one pastor and wife coming all the way from Tanzania. We thank God, and we are praying for a big breakthrough.

I don't know what God has for us after this seminar, but I feel strongly in my heart that it will be a great revival for the families in Kenya. I have my pastors coming with a lot of expectation from the Lord. This seem to be the first seminar for Pastor and their spouse in Kenya. So keep praying because it seems as if we are pioneering."

I have included my itinerary (below) to help you focus your prayers.

Uganda

Our first seminar (only one day) will be in Uganda. I will arrive and have a 30 minute radio broadcast. I have spoken before on the radio, but it has been interview rather than straight speaking. Also, I am speaking to a people I have never met.

I need God's grace and wisdom! I can't even see their faces. After a late night ride from the radio studio, we will start early in the morning with the seminar. The road from the airport is being repaired so we are not sure what that night ride will be like.

Further reformatting of the handouts is complete (fit two on one page).
Praise the Lord for providing enough finances to include handouts. The pastors love them and desperately need them.
My computer is back on my desk from repair. Printer is working well.
For my supportive family. Last night one child said, "I'm glad you are going and not." She meant that when I go Linda prepares special bonuses for good behavior. They love those bonuses. It also means no Chinese classes! But they do miss Dad.

Pray!

Pray for financial provision for another ministry similar to mine that needs $700. He leaves Tuesday for Peru. We work with God's servants around the world to reach His goals!
Paul leaves on Wednesday, March 17th. Pray the flights connect well. God protect the family.
As the pastor said, "I feel strongly in my heart that it will be a great revival for the families in Kenya." Let us pray along this line.
Pray for blessing on the radio show Friday night and the Saturday seminar.

2 1/2 Short Weeks Before Africa

Dear Support Team,

Yesterday during our family devotions, my youngest son asked "Why do you need so much money?" He was referring to the $8,500 needed for the African trip to train pastors and Christian leaders.

Each evening our family prays together for the needs of others as well as our own ministry and family. So this question was a natural outflow of praying for thousands of dollars to come in a short amount of time. Let me share with you what I shared with my own son and family.

Travel

A good amount is needed for travel. I need to fly to Africa but also take several round trip flights within Africa while there. But this is less than $2,000 even with the expenses of traveling to and from the airports. In some places I need to pay for travel to the seminar site.

Places to Stay

STM'10 African Donations

If you would like to contribute to this African trip, mark your contribution 'STM2010.'

Please give directly to BFF (or through church). Tax deductible receipts are provided at the end of the year.

100% of what is designated 'STM' (Short term missions) is used for these trips!

I will stay in Africa about 2 1/2 weeks. I would prefer to stay with African families or inexpensive hotels, but the coordinators want me (almost force me) to stay in better than average places-more secure.

They feel very responsible for me. One leader even offered to pay for my stay in a more expensive place (over US$100!). I can not remember having stayed in such an expensive place even in the US. Things are not so dangerous there. I even try to have one of them to stay with me so that we could stay at a less expensive accomodation. So I work hard at keeping the price down to US$50/day. But 15 days at $50 adds up! But this is still not the main expense.

The Ministry

We will hold 4 pastor/leader training seminars in Uganda and Kenya. We do our best to work out an agreed upon budget beforehand. The coordinating pastors are very gifted at this. They often need to rent accommodations, chairs, sound system, microphones, banners, etc. Remember they do not own these things. They usually need to be rented.

Nurturing

In Africa there are so many believers that it is easy to have a large seminar with very little spent on travel. Most of them do not need to stay overnight so this greatly reduces the costs.

However, we do like to provide one main meal. This is fine with a hundred people, but when one is catering for 400 pastors, this can get expensive even at US$1 per meal.This provides a very substantial meal. Just think of one large seminar with 400 pastors/Christian leaders for 3 days. 400 x $1 x 3 days = $1200.

The blessing of training so many pastors increases the cost. When we have less pastors, the expenses drops dramatically. We would rather have more pastors however.

Extended Training

Part of the BFF ministry is to provide training materials. Most African pastors do not have libraries. They do not even own books! They absolutely treasure Christian training materials. We try to supply a number of BFF books to the organizer, but they are too heavy for Paul to take a large amount.

What about all the attendees? Well, we try to provide handouts. If a 3 day seminar has ten talks, then a 60 page handout is not large at all. If we are talking about 100 pastors, it would not be worth mentioning. But altogether we expect 1,000 to attend one of the four seminars. At US$2.50 per 60 page handout that can add up to $2,500. Fortunately, this is per seminar rather than per day but still it is a lot.

In fact, most of this sum is not even included in our US$8,500 budget. If more comes in, then we will provide handouts for them. Hopefully, we will receive sufficient donations for handouts. We plan to reduce costs by having only one copy per couple attending the marriage seminars.

Train a pastor for 3 days and give him a handout for only US$10. What an investment!

Our Faith in a Great God!

This might sound like a long response to my son (I am sure it was not quite as long), but as a family, we have seen God's faithfulness, year after year, seminar after seminar. What a testimony this has become for our children.
Several times we have had to send money over Western Union when I was there.

Once, I finished the seminars and was on my way to the airport to leave India. I stopped at an internet cafe and received a Western Union. Someone had sent some money at the last moment. We were able to pay the expenses in full on the way to the airport!

God is faithful to care for what He wants done. We are glad to have a part in His important work!

Handouts have been prepared! They have to be done in a different format.
Almost 50% of the $8,500 has been promised or given for this STM. This is up from a mere 6.25% a month ago. Thank you for your generous support.
Linda is feeling much better.
Praise we could miss much of the record snowfall. We had a good visit with Paul's parents in the south. We only had one small incident with the 'L' portion of the exhaust pipe falling off onto the highway.
Thank the Lord for the many ways He has provided in the past and His promises to lean upon for the future.

Less than 3 weeks to go! Hopefully all the money will be in by then including money for the handouts.
May God watch over Linda when Paul is away. We are homeschooling six children from 12th grade down to second. She can't help with some courses like advanced Algebra. A little problem like sickness can cause great pressure.
Prepare the hearts and people for the seminars. We are seeking for God's Word to have a long term impact on the lives, families and ministries of these pastors and Christian leaders.
Special times of concentration for Paul as he must prayerfully go through more than twenty messages in the next three weeks. He departs on March 17th.

Dear Partners in Prayer,

In Preparation

Thank you for your investment in this ministry! Our goal is to effectively build up the hearts of God’s people around the world through His Word.

In the past two weeks I have been preparing for the upcoming mission to Africa. First, I coordinated and developed handouts for translation for the Ugandan mission.

That done, I am now updating handouts for the marriage seminar to a new format which can easily be adapted by users. For example, those in foreign countries usually use another size of paper (A4). It is important for the handouts to easily be converted to this size.

There are also many other various details which I have been paying attention to.

Think 4

Do remember the four upcoming seminars: one in Uganda and three in Kenya. Do especially pray for the pastors who oversee each seminar. They require so much work. Think about the pastor who is inviting 100 or 400 pastors. Do pray for them.

Pray for the attendees. The seminar is only 1 month away. So invitations have gone out.
Also pray for finances. Although costs are piling up (translations, tickets), very little support for this mission has come in yet. We only have 5.8%. So we need many thousands to properly hold these seminars.

Praise
Thank the Lord that the Ugandan handouts have been sent out.
Do thank the Lord for the progress on the marriage handouts.
Paul leaves Wednesday, March 17 and returns Saturday, April 3rd.

Requests
Pray for the attendees.
Seek the Lord for extra grace for those organizing the seminars.
Pray for finances. We still need about $8,000 in less than 4 weeks.
Grace and wisdom to prepare.
Linda (my wife) has not been able to throw off this lung congestion. Pray for healing.

We very much appreciate your prayers. The good news is that Rachel doing well and back home. Someone anonymously sent money to BFF so that they could pay their bill and come home. Praise the Lord and thank you for all your prayers. It means so much to this family.

You are a tremendous team to work with. It was about one week ago since this crisis happened. We have seen God lift up a very sick little girl and struggling pastor family.

Kenya & Uganda

Dear Support Team,

Plans for the African STM'10 are partially settled. Thanks for praying. They have taken a significant amount of time. I will be going about 2 weeks earlier than originaly planned, but it works out well this way. After a shorter trip to Uganda, I will travel to Kenya for three seminars.

Mityana, Uganda (March 19-20th)

This is the first trip to Uganda for me. Although the visit is shorter, this is a good way to better understand the situation there with potential for future service. A new overseer of 700 churches says 400 churches severely need training for his pastors.

After a radio program on Friday night, we will hold a one day seminar for a possible 100 pastors. The traveling is tight. I will have recently arrived from overseas. The schedule is a bit rushed, but I look forward to this visit.

Nairobi, Kenya (March 22-24th)

I am pleased to work with Rev. Matthew of Scripture Union. I appreciate his burden for the families throughout Kenya. We will train 25 couples in the Marriage seminar so that they can in turn train others.

Rev. Matthew oversees the SU Family ministry throughout Kenya. I especially appreciate his focus on training others to train others.

The need for instruction on marriage is so desperate. It is a neglected teaching. The marriage seminar that was last taught in Nigeria, which parallels our book Building a Great Marriage, was very much appreciated and helpful.

Kisumu, Kenya (March 25-27th)

Rev. Maurice did a great job overseeing the seminar last year. We did have trouble with the budget because God brought twice the number of attendees that we expected. In Kisumu we are inviting 200 pastor/leader couples to be trained in marriage principles so that they can work with their churches.

It will be a challenge to get the teaching down to the practical areas of life with such a large group.

Bondo, Kenya (March 29-31th)

Rev. Maurice will also oversee this seminar on discipleship. We are planing again for a large group.

These truths have a great impact on how these pastors view their own personal Christian lives and ministries to others. Once a person understands the 3 stages of discipleship, he can confidently help a person grow in each of the stages. (You can see and hear these messages here).

Report on Rachel

Dear Prayer Partners,

Thank you for your prayers. Rachel barely survived the night so she could be taken to the hospital in the morning. I will submit the note from Pastor Godstime that I just received today. She has Malaria. Do keep praying.

Thank you so much for your prayer support. On Sunday morning there was no hope for Rachel as we got to the hospital. The doctor's faith was lost over Rachel and every body kept praying and crying.

Rachel has been on drip with three injections every day. So far she is getting better.

The hospital has recommended drugs for us to buy from the chemist. We have spend allot of fund for medical bill.

He lost his second child when only weeks old last year.

Dear Rev. Paul,

Rachel is very very sick, please pray for her right now. It's 2:39am now Sunday morning, the temprature is very very high, we will rush her to the hospital around 6am.

We have done it (bathed her) over five times, but the temprature keep going up. The body is very hot...HOT.

We don't really know what to do next!

Looking Ahead to 2010

Dear Prayer Partners,

We are so grateful for your faithfulness in lifting us as a family and ministry before the Lord year after year. We need His grace to overflow in our own lives before it can benefit those to whom we minister. We encourage you to continue to pray for us as we seek the Lord's hand in the expansion of this ministry.

Suggestion: Pray for us when doing a daily task: (washing dishes, folding clothes, coming home from work, etc).

Raising the Goal to 3 Million

We are thankful to the Lord for granting us 2 1/4 million page views in 2009. Early each new year, I prayerfully consider what goal He wants us to set for the new year. We have set a new goal of 3 million page views a day (not hits which are many more). The increase is significant. It will not be accomplished without prayer, producing and tinkering.

Paul is doing a lot of tinkering lately. Some web pages were written eight years ago and are ancient though functional. One series could not even be found by Google search because the coding was so old. Pray for 8,300 pages to be read each day.

Getting Hot

One recently updated page is the BFF Store Resource page. It took Paul a week because there were many other associated pages that needed to be created. It was desperately outdated. The response has been great. Praise God! Visit us!

Moving Around the World

We are extending the pastor/leader training seminars to more places. Right now we are finishing plans for 3-4 seminars in Africa. There is a desperate need for discipleship and family/marriage training.

Although a final budget is not yet firm, it will probably be about $8-$9,000 depending on whether or not we hold a short training in a second country. Please pray with us as we see the LORD raise this amount for building up Christ's church around the world.

Web pages are continuing to be updated.
Various individuals have contributed to the web site by helping with improving the design and function of the web pages, translating articles into Chinese and catching grammar/spelling errors. We are thankful for them. If you are interested in helping, let me know!
The new BFF Store Resource page has had much activity since the update.
Praise God for YOU, our faithful prayer partners.
A fruitful 2009 year of ministry which included two significant African/Asian trips.

New Plan in Progress!

Merry Christmas Prayer Team!

With many old projects still waiting completion, one might wonder about the wisdom of proceeding with a new project. The time, however, has come. God has recently been impressing on my heart the great need to accelerate the distribution of BFF training materials. There is a world out there in desperate need solid Biblical discipleship training materials.

Think about a busy family during the Christmas season. They are exhausted and just want to get some rest. But then, they hear one of their children crying loud with a high fever. They need to get to the emergency room right away. They adjust their desire for rest to accommodate the urgent need.

The key is expansion. We want to boost our support for those Christian leaders around the world by offering specialized training. Instead of a training school in a building, we will offer training via the web to those who commit to being a BFF Partner.

Although the details of the plan are still in the works, I am seeking fresh insight on how to best implement this program. May God give extra grace to accomplish what needs to be done.

Some key web pages have been updated (introduction pages to Haggai and Isaiah and others).
The new BFF Store Resource page is completed!
Paul has finished producing a BFF Partners introductory video.
Family's health has been fine. Our van radiator started steaming on Christmas Sunday, but we are so thankful that we could manage to get home safely (praise God for the freezing weather).

Pray!

We still have not heard from Pastor Jagannath since he entered the hospital in southern India to seek treatment for acute pain.
Seek God's supply for our BFF general fund. In our last letter we thanked the Lord for sending ministry funds to serve others, but this year our general fund is quite low, down to about 60% despite recent generous gifts.
Our '92 van has had more frequent problems. We have been desiring to downsize to an 8-seat van for about a year now. Pray that we get the right replacement vehicle.
More wisdom as Paul thinks about how to implement the BFF Partners program and faith in God to get it done in a God-honoring way.

Provision in Recession

Dear Prayer Team,

Nine years have quickly passed by since I knelt weeping before the Lord as to what I was to do in my desperate situation. Only the Mighty God could have brought about all that He has through BFF.

Over the last few months, I have been deeply touched, again and again, by God’s faithful provisions for the BFF ministry and my family. He has caused a song of praise and affection to swell up in my heart.

“My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises!” (Psalms 57:7).

Each November I use our finances to testify to God’s faithfulness. In spite of all the financial woes that affect giving to nonprofits, God has graciously allowed us to use a large amount of our financial resources ($36,900+) for leadership training and the physical needs of believers in 2009. This is an increase from last year's BFF’s total operating budget (50% > 56%).

Recession might describe the world’s situation but God’s faithfulness working through His people best describes God’s way of providing. Thank you for your faithfulness in making all of this possible. BFF’s participation in these worldwide projects is increasing.

We had a wonderful annual board meeting. I will share in the next prayer letter about the exciting challenges of how I believe God wants us to invest more throughout the world by training Christian leaders and distributing more of discipleship training materials and concepts that God has graciously given us. Please pray as I finish up these plans. We now have almost 2,500 pages on the web.

Thank the Lord for His abundant provision throughout this year!
I have had extra time to focus on planning and to catch up on improving the website. The BFF store page has needed to be updated to my newer computer for two years. I hope to finish this soon.
God’s guidance through BFF’s board meeting.
Insight into how to proceed day by day as well as over the long term.

I need technical understanding as I work on updating web pages.
Wisdom to understand the next steps for BFF.
