Section 1 · Lesson 4 of 32

Life’s Glorious Expression

The chapter presents life as a framework for understanding Christian growth. Jesus and the biblical writers use images from creation to make spiritual realities understandable. New life has a beginning, but believers also need clear teaching about its development, direction, and purpose.

Lesson goal: Explain why spiritual life must be understood and developed in practical ways rather than reduced to concepts or routines.

The author cautions that defining theological terms, recalling powerful experiences, or completing spiritual routines can leave practical growth unexplained. Spiritual disciplines should serve renewal rather than become an end in themselves. Christian instruction needs to help ordinary believers understand, practice, and pass on the truth of abundant life in Christ.

Key Teaching Points

  • Creation’s familiar images can help explain spiritual life.
  • The beginning of new life must be followed by teaching about its development.
  • A spiritual experience does not replace learning to respond to the Spirit in daily conduct.
  • Spiritual disciplines should serve renewal and purposeful growth.

Scripture to Consider

John 1:4; Ephesians 4:16–29; John 10:10; 1 Peter 2:24

For Reflection

  1. Describe spiritual growth in everyday language that a new believer could understand.
  2. Consider one Bible-reading or prayer habit: how is it helping you grow in your relationship with God and daily conduct?

Reflection prompts help you apply the lesson; they are not graded quiz questions.
