6. Signs of New Life

New spiritual life produces early signs that should be recognized, protected, and encouraged.

New believers may possess little knowledge, yet genuine life begins to appear through new desires, repentance, faith, love for God’s Word, prayer, and identification with God’s people. These signs may be small, but they are precious.

Leaders sometimes expect immediate maturity and become impatient with weakness. Healthy discipleship distinguishes between new life and mature life. It protects the beginning stages while steadily guiding the believer forward.

Recognizing signs of life also guards us from confusing religious familiarity with spiritual vitality. The central question is not how long a person has attended church, but whether God’s life is present and growing.
