Section 1 · Lesson 8 of 32

Catch the Spirit

Wind currents and the uplift that helps an eagle soar illustrate dependence on God’s purposeful power. Difficult circumstances need not mean that God has lost control. Believers should affirm their willingness to serve His purposes and rely on His strength to carry out their part.

Lesson goal: Practice watchful prayer and reliance on God when His purposes require more than your natural resources.

The Spirit’s leading can expose the limits of time, money, abilities, or confidence. The chapter contrasts merely following our bold or timid natural tendencies with watching and praying for God’s direction, wisdom, and strength. The Spirit already gives believers a desire for God; truth clarifies that identity and supports faithful action.

Key Teaching Points

  • God remains purposeful even when circumstances seem confusing.
  • Our part combines willingness to obey with dependence on His strength.
  • Difficult tasks expose the limits of natural resources and the need for God’s help.
  • Watchful prayer should be a regular practice, not only a response to emergencies.

Scripture to Consider

Matthew 26:41; Psalm 5:3; Isaiah 40:31

For Reflection

  1. Identify a situation where you rely mainly on time, ability, money, or personality; pray about how to depend on God in it.
  2. Plan a daily time to watch and pray for direction, strength, and wisdom, including for situations that appear manageable.
