Israel’s defeat shows that religious activity and sacred symbols cannot replace repentance, obedience, and a living relationship with God.

The tragedy of 1 Samuel 4 exposes one of the most dangerous mistakes among God’s people: trusting religious symbols while ignoring God Himself.
Religion, including Christianity, often falls short because it lacks the Spirit, the Word of God, and the obedience that God’s people owe. However, do not be discouraged, for even in the darkest times, repentance leads us directly into God’s glorious presence where we can renew our devotion to Him. God, in His great grace, is bringing about the destruction of what is old and condemned to prepare the way for what is new and life-giving.
What’s remarkable is that a way back to God is always available. We can, if we choose, always repent. Consider the messages to the seven churches in Revelation. The Lord repeatedly told His church members to repent. We may wonder whether they were truly Christians in their hearts, yet, as a church, they were given the opportunity to avoid the promised estrangement of the Holy Spirit and His protection. This is the power behind 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If my people…”. There are conditions to the privilege of being close to God. They can take the first step. This is the powerful lesson we see here in 1 Samuel 4, even with Israel’s defeat and the final decline of the old priesthood.
Now, this chapter might seem distant and unrelated, but it is anything but. Religious decline always follows the same pattern, starting with the clergy—those who profess to know God the most—and spreading outward to the people of God. That is why the focus here is on the priests. They are responsible for guarding the Word of God and maintaining the understanding of God (Hos 4:6). There are many chances, marked by our first and second chances here, but remember, there is one last chance between life and death, heaven and hell. That is the third chance.
1.) First Chance: God is ignored (1 Samuel 4:1-2)
4:1 Thus the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to meet the Philistines in battle and camped beside Ebenezer while the Philistines camped in Aphek. 2 And the Philistines drew up in battle array to meet Israel. When the battle spread, Israel was defeated before the Philistines who killed about four thousand men on the battlefield. (NASB, unless otherwise noted).
What God foretold eventually came true for Samuel. We would have hoped that telling Eli, the priest, would make a difference, but Eli didn’t seem to budge in his heart. This was the first chance. God told Samuel what would happen.
God repeatedly spoke to Eli. As a boy, Samuel divulged the warning to Eli. Later, a man of God warned Eli (2:27-36), and Samuel, as God’s prophet, warned Eli (3:11-18).
God spoke again “to all Israel.” By then, everyone knew Samuel was a prophet (3:20). Note the summary points of his message.
- Ignoring God always results in judgment.
- The first chance of ignoring God brings defeat.
- Wisdom comes from the fear of God and obedience.
- Foolishness is typified by a disobedience of God’s Word.
Wisdom comes from fearing God, but a lack of wisdom is shown through disobedience. Foolishness is demonstrated by ignoring God’s Word. Sin always returns and pulls everyone into a pit. Study Proverbs. What God told Samuel finally came true. Hannah's cry did not save Israel, although it could have if the false priests had repented. This was their first chance to oppose evil and trust in God.

Escapism
Escapism is the belief that, despite ignoring God's commands, things won't get so bad. It’s an illusion—one that's particularly dangerous. Fear of God provides wisdom, but if those warnings are ignored, only one outcome is left. Let me ask you a few questions:
- 1) Dare you bring the curse of fornication and adultery on others, your life, and your marriage?
- 2) When you come to church half-heartedly, do you think this false worship will stop you from making foolish life mistakes?
- 3) Do you believe lies will actually help you succeed, even though the Lord warned that you will fall into trouble?
And so the list goes on. The Israelites heard God’s Word–“The word of Samuel came to all Israel”–but they didn’t respond. Surely, this wave of deception is the same that will come upon the ends of the ages: “deception of wickedness” (2 Thes 2:10).
