  3. Staying Close to the Vine

Lesson Goal

Abiding in Christ

Depend closely on Christ the Vine, receive the Father’s pruning, and grow in prayer, obedience, godliness, and lasting fruitfulness.

View Goal

Virtues: Dependence, godliness, yielding, fruitfulness

Teachings: Communion with Christ; the Father’s pruning and discipline

Skills: Prayer, Spirit-filled living, fruitful work

The Vine–Branches picture shows that spiritual life and fruitfulness come from continued dependence on Christ. A branch cannot produce lasting fruit by separating itself from the vine.

Abiding means intentionally remaining close to Christ in trust, obedience, prayer, and openness to the Father’s pruning. His correction is meant to increase fruit, not destroy us.

This intimacy changes the way we live with others. People who draw life from Christ become more fruitful, less controlled by fear, and increasingly able to bring His life, love, and strength into their relationships.
