Recovering the Art of Learning
Combating the Secular Mindset
God is irrelevant |

This approach to learning is typical of the secular mindset. We see absolutely no respect for God's world or the knowledge that He has revealed to us. Man thinks he can get along without God. The secular man is like a man who steals a term paper and puts his own name on it. |

God is our resource |

This approach to learning adapts the modern mindset except that it gives credit for the revelation of God. Truth belongs to God. This 'Christianized' style, however, falls short because, in the end, man still takes that knowledge and truth and uses it without God. The Christianized man is like a man who writes a paper and writes down his resources, but after which he becomes convinced that the thoughts belong to him. |

God is our partner |

|
This approach to learning follows the biblical model where God is recognized and depended upon in each stage of learning and teaching. Truth can never be used apart from God. The godly man is like a man who prays and studies God's Word as He seeks God's wisdom, acknowledges God's help, thanks God for His wisdom, cries out to the Lord for forgiveness, and pleads for power to live according to His power so that His truth might accomplish what God wants with His truth. |
Summary
We have acclimatized ourselves and our learning habits to a secular mindset.
The secular Christian (truly, there is no such thing) thinks that the one who uses God's truth is right. He is convinced that if he can speak God's Word or recognize it, he is safe and right. In fact, even non-Christians use many of God's truths. He just doesn't realize it.
The difference between the true Christian mindset is that he allows the truth of God to touch and influence his decisions. He sees God as part of revealing His truth, so he can walk closer to Him. Truth and God are undivisible. Just as Jesus said, "I am the Truth, the Way and the Life."
