The Life Core · Section 3
23. The Parts of the Whole
The Life Analogy and the Growth Analogy supply complementary parts of one coherent picture of Christian development.
Paul J. Bucknell
The Life Analogy emphasizes source, vitality, and the inward work of God. The Growth Analogy emphasizes stages, needs, responsibilities, and movement toward maturity. Each corrects a weakness that appears when the other is used alone.
An emphasis on life without developmental wisdom can become vague and unstructured. An emphasis on growth stages without dependence on God can become mechanical. Joined together, the analogies keep power and process connected.
Excellent training moves between these perspectives. It asks both, “Is God’s life active?” and “What kind of growth is needed now?”
