27. Training New Believers
New believers need a simple, relational, and life-giving introduction to following Christ.
Paul J. Bucknell
Training at the beginning should establish identity, assurance, trust in God, and basic patterns of obedience. The new believer needs to know what God has done and how to respond in daily life.
Personal care is especially important. Questions, fears, old habits, and opposition can quickly discourage new life. A dependable believer helps interpret these experiences through Scripture and prayer.
Good beginning training is selective. It gives enough truth for strong foundations without burying the learner under unnecessary complexity.
Core Teaching
- Beginning discipleship establishes identity, assurance, and basic obedience.
- Personal care protects new life through early challenges.
- Simplicity and selectivity strengthen foundations.
Reflect and Apply
- What must every new believer understand early?
- Who provides dependable personal care after conversion?
- Which unnecessary complexities could be removed from beginning training?
