Purpose

Bible Study Questions for 1 Corinthians 15:9-10 challenges us to reflect on our accomplishments in a proper and realistic way, giving full acknowledgment to God for His work and yet realizing our part in His awesome work in us.


1 Corinthians 15:9-10

9 For I am the least of the apostles, who am not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me” (1 Corinthians 15:9-10).

Starter

  • Name one accomplishment that you are happy about?
  1. Who is speaking in verse 9?
  2. Why does he say he is “the least” or that he is “not fit to be called an apostle” (9)? Amplify his explanation from your general knowledge.
  3. Do you think he has a healthy attitude towards God’s calling? Why?
  4. Do all Christians receive a calling of some sort (Rom 8:30)?
  5. How many times does Paul use the word ‘grace’ in verse 10? How does he describe this grace? What are good synonyms for this word?
  6. The phrase “I am what I am” (10) can be used of every believer. What does it describe?
  7. How might God’s grace towards a person “prove vain” in some situations (10)?
  8. What made God’s grace so powerful in Paul’s case (10)?
    Explain how God’s grace interworks with our labor?

Summary

The Christian life is marked by the combination of God’s mysterious power along with our response to His work in us, that which creates the sense of accountability. There are no mistakes when it comes to God’s calling, but only obedience or disobedience. We can always succeed as we follow His leading through His awesome empowering.
